Most of what is now Ghana was inhabited in the Middle Ages and the Age of Discovery by different ethnic groups. Main articles: Ashanti Empire and Kingdom of Dagbon Ghana was known for its large gold usage and hence was named the Land of Gold. Ghana means "strong warrior king" and was the title accorded to the kings of the medieval Ghana Empire in West Africa-not to be confused with today's Ghana, for the empire was further north, in modern-day Mali, Senegal and southern Mauritania, as well as in the region of Guinea. Ghana has maintained since 1993 one of the freest and most stable governments on the continent, and it performs relatively well in healthcare, economic growth, and human development, so that it has a significant influence in West Africa and is highly integrated in international affairs, being a member of the Non-Aligned Movement, African Union, Economic Community of West African States, Group of 24, and Commonwealth of Nations. Ghana is a unitary constitutional democracy led by a president who is both head of state and head of government. Most Ghanaians are Christians (71.3%) almost a fifth are Muslims a tenth practise traditional faiths or report no religion. Ghana is a multi-ethnic country with a diverse population, linguistic and religious groups while the Akan are the largest ethnic group, they constitute only a plurality. Ghana subsequently became influential in decolonisation efforts and the Pan-African movement. These were unified as an independent dominion within the Commonwealth of Nations on 6 March 1957, becoming the first colony in West Africa to achieve sovereignty. Following over a century of colonisation, Ghana's current borders took shape, encompassing four separate British colonial territories: Gold Coast, Ashanti, the Northern Territories, and British Togoland. Beginning in the 15th century, the Portuguese Empire, followed by numerous other European powers, contested the area for trading rights, until the British ultimately established control of the coast by the late 19th century. Numerous kingdoms and empires emerged over the centuries, of which the most powerful were the Kingdom of Dagbon in the north and the Ashanti Empire in the south. The first permanent state in present-day Ghana was the Bono state of the 11th century. The capital and largest city is Accra other major cities are Kumasi, Tamale, and Sekondi-Takoradi. With nearly 31 million inhabitants (according to the 2021 census), Ghana is the second-most populous country in West Africa, after Nigeria. Ghana covers an area of 238,535 km 2 (92,099 sq mi), spanning diverse biomes that range from coastal savannas to tropical rainforests. It abuts the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south, sharing borders with Ivory Coast in the west, Burkina Faso in the north, and Togo in the east. He brought 70 Chinese labourers to the Island and built a trading post at Nootka. The colony of Vancouver Island began with the arrival of John Meares in 1788, a trader of sea otter furs with China. ![]() Since that time, it has worked towards fulfilling the mandate to ensure the survival of all aspects of cultural heritage of the Kwakwaka’wakw. ![]() The U’mista Cultural Society was incorporated under the British Columbia Societies Act on March 22, 1974. First Nations’ artwork, masks and clothing are appreciated internationally for their singular beauty. Visual manifestation of this rich culture is evidenced in elaborately carved totem poles and beautifully constructed longhouses that grace the Island. Their way of life was based on the generous bounty of the earth, and their spiritual culture on the natural world. There are three main First Nations groups on Vancouver Island: the Kwakwaka’wakw, the Nootka and the Coastal Salish. In the Rainforest, where old growth areas have been preserved, one gets a glimpse of the past, unadulterated by the changes wrought in this century. If you stare out at the smoky Sooke Hills on a misty day, or visit Goldstream Park during the salmon run in November, it is easy to imagine the life of the First Nations people on the Island prior to European arrival. Indian names like Cowichan, Songhees, Haida and Sooke (T’Sou-ke Nation) come from an Aboriginal population that has inhabited the Island since the ice age. Saturna, Galiano and Estevan have exotic Spanish derivation, while Cook, Douglas, Chatham and Cavendish hearken back to English discovery and governance. Traveling through nebulae slows the pursuing fleet down, but at great risk to your own ship. Distress beacons bring rewards or danger … usually both. Combat is a tricky balancing act of juggling power needs across your ship, fixing damage, and zeroing your attacks in on specific enemy systems. The game mixes strategy, skill progression, and exploration into a satisfying stew. Sometimes it’s those awful space spiders. Sometimes it’s an enemy ship, or a merchant, or a pirate hiding in an asteroid field. What you find as you move from system to system is completely randomized. Each new location you visit relates the next chapter in your own little space adventure. You play by calling up the star map once your FTL drive is charged and choosing an adjacent system to travel to. Death comes frequently (and often without warning) in FTL as you travel from system to system, and sector to sector. That’s OK, since you’ll be starting plenty of new games. The only truly set quantity is the ship that you start with you can unlock multiple ships and variants over time, but you’ve got to stick to the one you start your game with. The simple-yet-stylish graphics and top-down perspective suggest more of a retro vibe, but there’s a whole lot of depth here. What is FTL? The game gives you God-like control over a Federation spaceship that’s charged with ferrying critical information across multiple sectors of space while the evil rebel fleet gives pursuit. There’s the game itself, which receives the new content on Mac, Linux, and Windows as a free update, and the Advanced-enhanced iPad version, which complements the newly updated game with exceptionally well-executed touch-based controls. Really, we’ve got two separate considerations here. On top of all the new stuff – which we’ll get to momentarily – there’s also the game’s first-time appearance as a non-PC game, with an iPad release. And indeed you were right, for it was excellent. “Surely that would be a good thing,” you pronounce, for you played Rome in 2004, and you found it to be excellent. I expected that little would have been changed about the game, except “Total War” and “Rome” switching sides of the infamous Total War colon, and the usual GLORIOUS HD which tends to headline any strategy remaster. I’ll admit this coloured my expectations a little. ![]() This remaster, I suppose, was a logical next step from that, and it’s actually Feral’s first game made for Windows. They’ve done a lot of Total Wars over the years, and even put Rome on android back in 2018, to a largely favourable reaction from players. TW:RR has been developed by Feral Interactive, best known for making Mac and Linux ports of blockbuster games. The default felt a little crowded for me, but there are scaling options. both? This is the new UI, as it appears on the campaign map. The answer I eventually arrived at, and which will take a bit of explaining, is. I’ve definitely enjoyed a few days of Roming it up, but it's been hard to put my finger on whether this feels like a solid nostalgia piece, or a new, weirdly unambitious entry in the series. ![]() The result, released today, is a remaster of 2004’s Rome: Total War called. It’s interesting, then, that the celebrated manbattling series has at last succumbed to the wave of remasters sweeping the strategy genre, and taken a rummage in the back catalogue. And though there have been missteps from time to time, it’s hard to disagree that the general trend in quality has been positive. Even so, the formula has been tweaked here and there, with every one of the nine and a half million Total War games released since Shogun in 2000. When conflicts begin, unpredictable and unimaginable outcomes can become all too real. Widening unrest could destabilize other countries in Russia’s orbit, such as Kazakhstan, and even spill into Russia itself. Putin will face a long, bloody insurgency that could spread across multiple borders, perhaps even reaching into Belarus to challenge Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin’s stalwart ally. But if Russia pushes on to occupy much of the country and install a Kremlin-appointed puppet regime in Kyiv, a more protracted and thorny conflagration will begin. It will enjoy reliable military and economic support from abroad and the backing of a united population. If Russia limits its offensive to the east and south of Ukraine, a sovereign Ukrainian government will not stop fighting. But Putin’s best-laid plans might easily unravel in the face of popular Ukrainian national resistance and an insurgency. As a retired Russian-speaking CIA operations officer who served in Central Asia and managed agency counterinsurgency operations, I did not think Putin would have attacked Ukraine unless he had already devised a reliable end game, given the costs of an intractable conflict. ![]() Although some reports suggest Ukrainian troops have rebuffed attacks in certain parts of the country, it seems more likely that Russian President Vladimir Putin will decide just how far Russia goes into Ukraine. ![]() The Ukrainian military is no match for this Russian juggernaut. Russian forces have struck targets across Ukraine and seized key facilities and swaths of territory. |
